Key to Network Controllability

چکیده
Liu et. al. recently proposed a minimum number of driver nodes, ND, needed to obtain full structural controllability over a directed network [1]. Driver nodes are unmatched nodes, from which there are directed paths to all matched nodes. Their most important assertion is that a system’s controllability is to a great extent encoded by the underlying network’s degree distribution, P (kin, kout). Is the controllability of a network decided almost completely by the immediate neighbourhood of a node, while, even slightly distant nodes play no role at all? Motivated by the above question, in this communication, we argue that an effective understanding of controllability in directed networks can be reached using distance based measures of closeness centrality (CC) and betweenness centrality (BC) and may not require the knowledge of local connectivity measures like in-degree and out-degree.

Intrinsic dynamics induce global symmetry in network controllability
Controlling complex networked systems to desired states is a key research goal in contemporary science. Despite recent advances in studying the impact of network topology on controllability, a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic effect of network topology and individual dynamics on controllability is still lacking. Here we offer a theoretical study with particular interest in the div...
متن کاملLaplacian Dynamics on Cographs: Controllability Analysis through Joins and Unions
In this paper, we examine the controllability of Laplacian dynamic networks on cographs. Cographs appear in modeling a wide range of networks and include as special instances, the threshold graphs. In this work, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the controllability of cographs, and provide an efficient method for selecting a minimal set of input nodes from which the network is ...
متن کاملControllability Characterizations of Leader-Based Swarm Interactions
In this paper, we investigate what role the network topology plays when controlling a network of mobile robots. This is a question of key importance in the emerging area of humanswarm interaction and we approach this question by letting a human user inject control signals at a single leader-node, which are then propagated throughout the network. Based on a user study, it is found that some topo...
متن کاملRobustness analysis of network controllability
Structural controllability, which is an interesting property of complex networks, attracts many researchers from various fields. The maximum matching algorithm was recently applied to explore the minimum number of driver nodes, where control signals are injected, for controlling the whole network. Here we study the controllability of directed Erdös–Rényi and scale-free networks under attacks an...
متن کاملPolynomial-Time Algorithm for Controllability Test of a Class of Boolean Biological Networks
In recent years, Boolean-network-model-based approaches to dynamical analysis of complex biological networks such as gene regulatory networks have been extensively studied. One of the fundamental problems in control theory of such networks is the problem of determining whether a given substance quantity can be arbitrarily controlled by operating the other substance quantities, which we call the...
